ISO:AI (In Search of Artificial Insemination) is a performance  video in which I state my terms outling a future performance as a gestational carrier. Within the filmic architecture of this video, I occupy the role of both subject and object, referencing the role that women-assigned-at-birth are conditioned with through a series of law-enforced regulations and socially constructed belief systems. The use of the avatar signals a fantasy of configuring the body and identity from a selection of parts, a supposedly “postmodern” body that shapeshifts. By confronting the audience with a body that performs agency over who controls reproductive rights, I reference the matrixial/maternal relation as a matter of hosting the other while simultaneously indicating the exisiting commodity and property of offspring for a system that benefits from the largely uncompensated and unacknowledged labour of birthing bodies. The work investigates birthing agency in a climate of tense global disputes over reproductive rights for females-assigned-at-birth.
