I WOULD RATHER BE A CYBORG THAN A GODDEXX, screenstill, video performance, 2019.

This video specifically references the quote made by Donna Haraway, in her seminal essay “The Cyborg Manifesto”. Haraway introduces the cyborg as the “fiction mapping our reality,” and “an imaginative resource,” as well as a “potent [myth]” (Haraway 191-196). The cyborg is a cybernetic organism that hybridizes organic and machine matter through reconfiguration and enhancement. It is both a creature of social reality and fiction and posits the breakdown of boundaries, and rejects the ideal of wholeness. The cyborg I employ in my work can be characterized through paranoid rationality, expressed through a distorted voice. I combine the fantasy of self-control with fear and confrontation to expose the emotional and bodily limitations of mortality. I attempt to carnivalize the cyborg, by utilizing lo-tech moving images to transgress the boundaries it creates between human and non-human, as one that integrates, communicates, and recomposes through technology, screens, and social networks.
